#2 - A Course in Miracles (ACIM)

What is ACIM?

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a spiritual guide designed to shift our perception from fear to love. It teaches that the world we see is shaped by our thoughts, and that true peace comes when we let go of fear and surrender to love. The course consists of three parts: a text, a workbook with 365 daily lessons, and a manual for teachers—but don’t let that intimidate you. At its core, ACIM is about undoing the mental blocks that keep us from experiencing the love and peace that have always been within us.

Where I Was When I Found It

I first heard about ACIM through David Hawkins’s books (one of which I will cover later). He kept recommending it, so I figured there had to be something to it. When I opened the workbook, the very first lesson stopped me in my tracks:

"Nothing I see in this room (or anywhere) means anything."

Wait, what? That made zero sense to me. I had always believed my thoughts were real, never once questioning them. But ACIM challenged me to step outside of my usual way of thinking. It was uncomfortable—and honestly, I resisted it hard.

At first, I couldn’t stick with it. The lessons were simple but deeply challenging. It took me two years to complete the workbook the first time. I once heard an ACIM teacher say, "If you never feel like throwing the workbook away, you’re not serious about it." That made me laugh because I had definitely wanted to toss it more than once.

How I Used It

Despite my resistance, I kept going. ACIM isn’t something you “learn” overnight—it slowly unravels the way you see yourself and the world.

One of my biggest struggles was with the concept of holiness. The course says:

"You are holy because you are the Son of God."

I could accept that I was a child of God, but holy? No way. I saw too many flaws in myself—too many mistakes, too many imperfections. It took me almost ten years before I fully understood what ACIM was trying to show me.

Then, one day, as I was reading a lesson, I just started crying. It finally clicked. Holiness wasn’t about being perfect. It was about seeing beyond my flaws. It had always been there, underneath all my doubts and fears.

Why I Like This Tool

ACIM changed my life because it changed how I see everything. It taught me:

  • My thoughts are not who I am.

  • Fear is an illusion that I can let go of.

  • Love is my true nature.

  • I don’t have to figure everything out—I can surrender to God.

More than anything, ACIM deepened my connection with God in a way I never expected.

How I Use This Tool Today

Now, I go through the workbook every year, and each time, I discover something new. Lessons that once made no sense now feel like deep truths. It’s like peeling back layers—the more I surrender, the more I understand.

How You Can Apply This Tool

  • Start the workbook—it’s designed to be practiced, not just read.

  • Be patient with resistance—if it feels hard, that’s normal!

  • Don’t overthink it—some lessons won’t make sense right away, and that’s okay.

  • Find a study group—ACIM is powerful, but discussing it with others can make the journey easier.
